7,804 non-Belgians have registered for the local elections. Here's why We're Committed.
7,804 non-Belgians have registered for the local elections in the Brussels city municipality. That's 15% of all potential voters. And although this is an all-time high percentage, the potential could be much better. Our municipality needs to do more to inform people about their voting rights. And why not at the regional level as well? For those who have registered, I'm happy to get a coffee with you and discuss our shared Brussels future. Here's why:
In October, I want to help build your ideal city, where you, I, and all other Brussels residents can count on a city council that offers people freedom and opportunities. And these are not just empty words. Because a free city means a safe city, where everyone can be themselves, regardless of sexual orientation, religion, or background. 75% of all Brussels residents are of non-Belgian origin. This makes us all a minority, of which the majority primarily identifies as Brusseleir. This makes us strong, unique, and authentically Brussels.
Freedom also means justice and responsibility. In a hyper-diverse city like Brussels, we accept each other when possible, and tolerate each other when necessary, as long as we continue to work on a common framework in which everyone finds their place. We keep our city clean and give each other the space to grow, to start businesses, to have fun, and to be inspired. We ensure safe streets, mobility that connects us, and a healthy living environment. We protect our heritage and our last pieces of nature. We build and renovate to keep our housing affordable. We make our city and our economy more sustainable, ready for a climate-neutral future. Our schools are our engines of emancipation, where every Brussels resident can become themselves.
We give everyone freedom, but we do not abandon anyone. We take care of those who need it, but we also provide a springboard to an independent and free life. Because it is precisely that freedom that has made Brussels what it is. If you contribute to this, you are a Brusseleir.
That is what I believe in. That is what I stand for: a free and safe city that believes in a better future. That is not always the case today. Our city needs to become safer, cleaner, and more sustainable. Only then will we be truly free. Join the conversation and share your thoughts. Discover our 9 missions for our city.
